What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical and informational support to new and expectant parents before, during and after birth, as well as possibly while trying to conceive or in the early postpartum period.Doulas aren't medical professionals. They don't deliver babies or provide medical advice or medical care. Doulas assist and advocate for the birthing parent.

What does a doula do?

.

A doula’s duty is to provide a continuous source of comfort, encouragement and support (both emotional and physical) during labor.

Unlike an OB/GYN or midwife, a doula does not have medical training — they're there to serve as a soothing voice of experience, help with relaxation techniques and breathing exercises, offer advice on labor positions, and so on.

A few of the ways doulas can offer support include:

  • Before your due date, your doula will meet with you a few times so you can get to know each other. They'll learn how to best support you, such as by providing supportive referrals to ensure you have the best birth possible (for example, a chiropractor, acupuncture provider, pelvic physical therapist or prenatal massage therapist), and go through a few basic childbirth education touchpoints.

  • A doula can offer a treasure trove of non-medical pain-management techniques including massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, music and mantras. They'll try different combinations to find the right one for you.

  • A doula serves the important role of helping advocate for you in your most vulnerable times in labor and in the immediate postpartum period. They'll help ensure your voice is heard and your preferences are honored by your medical team.

What are the benefits of childbirth education classes?

  • Childbirth classes help build your confidence in your body’s ability to give birth.

  • You can discuss your fears about labor and birth with the instructor and other couples with the same concerns.

  • Your partner will learn about childbirth and how to support you on the big day. You may find that attending childbirth classes together will create a special bond.

  • Your instructor will discuss pain relief options, including massage, relaxation, breathing techniques, and medications.

  • A tour of your birthing facility during class will give you the opportunity to see the staff in action. This is a great time to ask your instructor about routine practices, such as electronic fetal monitoring and freedom of movement during labor.

Testimonials

“Symone was such a comfort for me before and during my child birth. As a first time mother, I can’t explain how much her guidance meant to me. She kept me informed, focused, and calm through it all. I felt cared about, listened to, and happy to have someone there who I could trust, guiding me through each step. I recommend Symone to all expecting mothers. Thank you  Symone
